DESCRIPTION : This is a MAGNIFICENT sterling silver necklace that was handwrought in Taxco, Mexico, circa 1940, by renowned silver maestros, LOS CASTILLO. LOS CASTILLO was established by Antonio Castillo (?-2000) and Margot van Voorhies Carr (Margot de Taxco ~ his wife at the time ~ they divorced ten years later) and his brothers in 1939. Castillo started out his long career by working at Taller de Las Delicias for William Spratling. This necklace is masterfully crafted in a very classical motif with a great art deco look. It consists of eighteen large silver links with flowing designs, oblong demi sps and round demi sps surrounded with raised silver framing ~ the designs are heavily oxidized which highlights the exquisite silverwork beautifully. The links are connected with soldered silver "O" rings that are at the top of the links which allows the necklace to lay gracefully around your neck on your chest. The clasp is a simple hook closure that is seen on much of the early Taxco jewelry. This is a classically elegant, very early, signed LOS CASTILLO vintage necklace ~ it is extremely well crafted and is highly collectible ~ collector/museum/heirloom quality ~ simply THE BEST ! Christmas is coming ~ art-to-wear vintage Taxco silver is a gift that will last a lifetime!!! SIZE: Inside circumference when closed is 16", width is 5/8", and weight is 81 grams. CONDITION : Superior vintage condition ~ no dents/dings to silverwork ~ no damage noted~ rich, age associated patina to the silver (could be polished to a brilliant shine if new owner prefers that look) ~ just about PERFECT! HALLMARKS : "LOS CASTILLO, TAXCO, STERLING, MADE IN MEXICO, 264 (design number)". LOS CASTILLO and this identical hallmark (photo L-59) are shown on pages 99-105 of Bille Hougart's highly respected source book, The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks (2006 edition). According to Mr. Hougart, LOS CASTILLO used this hallmark from 1940 until 1945.
