Perhaps one of the most interesting views is the image of the sweeping bird's-eye view of a fairly new Aspen Colorado (the now renowned ski resort area). These images were obviously published with the intent of promoting railroad travel throughout this scenic area and it must have seemed just short of miraculous to the typical "pre-automobile era" traveler to see such scenery with the speed and convenience of a train passenger. The Colorado Midland Railway, incorporated in 1883, was the first standard gauge railroad built over the Continental Divide in Colorado. It ran from Colorado Springs to Leadville and through the divide at Hagerman Pass to Aspen and Grand Junction. The Midland was an extraordinarily difficult railroad to operate in large because it had very little level track. In crossing Colorado, the line made three summits- at Hayden Divide, at Trout Creek Pass, and at Hagerman Pass.
