LOT OF 142 PHOTOS FAMILY OF U S RENOWNED DENTIST NEWELL SILL JENKINS IN GERMANYDescription :Dr. Newell Sill Jenkins, born in 1840, became a renowned dentist and led the revival of porcelain all the while removing his practice from the United States to Dresden, Germany, where he purchased the imposing Villa Thorwald. Dr. Jenkins, besides treating many crowned heads of state was also a friend of Richard Wagner and Samuel L. Clemens among others. He married Clara Elizabeth Upton of New England and they had two children, Leonard Abbot Jenkins, born in 1868, and Grace Madeline Jenkins, born in 1886. This collection (removed from a flimsy album once maintained by the daughter) includes 138 vintage, original photographs and five postcards. The daughter, Grace, married in 1899 (yes, when she was thirteen) a British diplomat, Francis Cavalie Gow-Gregor (translation can be strange, on the marriage document of their daughter later his middle name, Cavalie, appears as "Courthouse"). Initially Grace and her husband went off to India but at some point early on they settled in London. The son, Leonard, attended Yale, and was involved with a number of businesses, but primarily related to medicines. The first scan show the family, from the right, Dr. Jenkins, Gow-Gregor, Grace, one of their children, Mrs. Jenkins and a relative on the step of Villa Thorwald. Scans three and four is a postcard of the villa written by Dr. Jenkins and signed simply "Daddy" to his daughter in London. Scan four re cutouts of Grace and her husband, and then a photo of Grace with her son, Donald Cavalie Gow-Gregor (1900-1933). There are several photos from the same time of Grace with one or both of her children, the daughter being Phoebe Theodosa Gow-Gregor (1906-1956). The next four scenes are among several taken in and around Dresden in 1900. The next scan is of the son, Leonard in Dresden later when doing graduate work after Yale. The next scan is one of only a couple from the years in India. And the last is one of several from a skiing trip in the Alps. One source I found, the California Dental Association noted how under-appreciated Dr. Jenkins' work has become. Frankly, it was extremely difficult just putting together basic information of the family, especially in light of Dr. Jenkins' obvious wealth and influence. Strangely, one of the tidbits I came across was the death in 1922 of Francis Cavalie Gow-Gregor's mother, Theodosia Gorge Gow-Gregor, at the age of 84, and this only because she died in France and the British Consulate filed a death notice. Please note that I have scanned the essential portions of the photos, many of which have a border, and due to the flimsy album from which they came several have folds or creases or tears, but overall an interesting archive.Please note this item is being relisted after having been purchased by an offer tendered by a buyer who then, clearly from "buyer's remorse" recanted and I agreed to refunds his money and cancel his order.
