It was first released by the United States Mint on November 24, 1986. It is struck only in the one-troy ounce size, which has a nominal face value of one dollar.The catalyst of the American Silver Eagle bullion ultimately comes from the federal plan to sell silver holdings from the Defense National Stockpile in the 1970's and 1980's. In 1982, Senator McClure introduced a bill to provide for the disposal of silver from the national stockpile through the issuance of silver coins; this was amended in 1985 by Representative Larry E.
