Ever wonder, or do you remember what it was like before Email? How about those days before Internet viewing of banking, stocks, utilities, work schedules, catalog shopping and ordering details on every product imaginable? Or maybe you just like to snoop into the private lives of people from 138 years ago. (I did) and here is your chance to see some of the past too.
This auction is for a very mixed lot of well over one hundred pieces of correspondence that are almost all in their original envelopes. This is a very mixed lot dating back from 1873 (the earliest date that I noticed) to1940 (the latest date I saw on 2 letters from Congressman Robert T. Secrest). Most (about 70%) of these are from1873 to 1919. Some are from the 1920's and 1930's. Just a couple are 1940. They are in mixed condition also. Some are like new, some good and a few that I debated about throwing away myself. Most still have the stamps on the covers and a legible postmark. The denominations on the stamps are so mixed that I can't begin to say anything but that they are from 1 cent and up. Most are 1-2-3 and 4 cent. There are a few foreign, but not many that I recognized as such. There are a lot of early 1900's that have elaborate return addresses on the envelopes as well as printed advertising covering the backs of the envelopes. A lot of these letters are personal correspondence giving general family news, political thoughts, crop prices, diseases, deaths, travel, work conditions, wages, etc. Many of them are advertising brochures for everything from plows, pony carts, books, exotic animals, furnace pipes, and other household goods. Some are to or from law offices, congress and the house of representatives, probate judges, stock companies, freight offices, railroad offices, and even an insane asylum. Most of the envelopes have something (bills, letters, stock options, brochures, etc.) in them, but some are empty and some of the correspondence is without a cover. It is possible that you may be able to match some of them up. Although most of the envelopes are aged, they have kept the material inside looking surprisingly like newly mailed pieces. Please view the pictures and the scans very carefully. I was only allowed 12 views, so hopefully, I have taken enough views of them randomly to show you the tears, soil and any flaws I could see, as well as the dates and types of material enclosed. Please ask any questions before bidding accordingly. If sold, I will ship this in a USPS Priority Mailing Box, packed to the top, to any U.S.A.ONLY Zone for $7.00. I am not a dealer or a collector, just someone trying to place family memorabilia with those who can enjoy it before our children or grand children put it all into a dumpster. Thank you for viewing and good luck on all of your bidding.
