3 cased sixth plate tintypes and one uncased quarter plate size, all anonymous. Foremost is a New York private presenting an Enfield rifle and belted, reversed Sheffield type knife having a usually long blade in leather scabbard with elongated belt frog. A clear, bright oval “SNY” plate (in reverse) is visible as is a missing metal button on his ripped trouser fly. Housed in a fine “Nesting Bird” figural case, the image improves dramatically outside of the grimy cover glass. Next is a seated older private with heavy gray-speckled beard wearing four button sack coat and forage cap under brass patriotic mat in full composition case. Under direct light the tintype shows strong detail, otherwise the plate lacks contrast being somewhat dull tonally. The third image trimmed slightly smaller than sixth plate size is a bandsman wearing a mounted pattern great coat with long cape and fold-over collar cradling a smaller multi-valve saxhorn type instrument. Housed in a double thermoplastic case with patriotic shield motif, the plate is cloudy and lacks strong definition having once been mounted in an oval mat. The uncased quarter plate depicting two cavalry troopers with sabers and holstered pistols unfortunately shows the cumulative effect of decades outside glass. The plate is damaged with numerous abrasions, bends and scratches.
