LOT of 3 - VINTAGE VICTORIAN ALMOST COMPLETE SATIN FAN BLOCKS
Even though these spectacular quilt blocks are made from satin fabrics, I am stopping short of calling it a crazy quilt block due to the fact that they are meticulously pieced in a standard block pattern not random.
Block size: This quilt block measures about 10 ¾ by 10 ¾ inches. The edges are raw and finished with a simple hand overcast stitch in a basting thread. This block appears to be pieced form a collection of planned fabrics not a patchwork of scraps left over from dressmaking. Each of the 10 colors for the 10 fan blades are different but they are all the same texture. The fabric is not a heavy satin but rather a soft sateen. My best guess is that the fiber content is silk. The black fabric used for the fan handle and background piece is also the same weight and texture.
Construction: Each block was pieced completely from the fine fabrics and then backed with a square of cotton muslin. The muslin served to stabilize the fabric for the rather extensive embroidery. However, due to this construction it is impossible to determine whether the main block is hand or machine pieced. My best guess it that it was put together by machine due to the precision of the work. The backing fabric was then marked with a tracing for the embroidery.
