Welcome to 21thegreatone's Auctions... ** *ATTN : RARE WORLD WAR II COLLECTORS...THIS IS ONE FOR YOU!!!* ** ***NOTE" For those of you who are following my auctions on these letters and V-Mails...this lot is a MUST HAVE!! T is a letter with a Postmark on December 31, 1943 (NEW YEAR'S EVE!!) and one of the LARGE V-mails has a RARE "War Department" message stapled to it that indicated one of the V-mails "could not be photographed because the message sheet was defaced or mutilated (see below for details) *** ******YOU ARE BIDDING ON THE FOLLOWING:****** An AMAZING and touching lot of NINE "Letters & V-Mails Home" from a Soldier stationed in ITALY to his Wife at home in WASHINGTON, PA. As RARE as you can get...these are genuine ONE OF A KIND FINDS for the Vintage Militaria Collector, or Ephemera Collector! Two (2) Letters and Seven (7) V-Mails all dated between Dec. 3--31, 1943 NOTE : The action in Italy (by this time) was pretty intense, and Censorship of the Military Mail was at a peak. Thus, Mail service to the States was VERY SLOW, as you will see that the Postmarks on the envelopes are often 4 days to 20+ days AFTER the dates on the actual letters. FROM "PVT WADE L. McDOWELL (#33286407) of the "HQ BTRY 2nd BN 77th FIELD ARTILLERY.", stationed in ITALY during World War II in 1943. His wife is a MRS. WADE L. McDOWELL ("Dorothy" or "Dot") of WASHINGTON, PA (Often referred to in the letters as "Honey" or "Dearest Honey" or "Mommie" in his letters. (Washington, PA is a town just outside of Pittsburgh) Handritten by Pvt. McDowell, his Batallion stationed in ITALY during December 1943, to his wife (missing him VERY MUCH back home in PA.)...these absolutely powerful, poignant and heartfelt V-Mails are a fascinating piece of history! Content of the letters range widely beginning with the Dec. 3, 1943 V-mail (the one with the MILITARY EXAMINER MESSAGE stapled to it indicating it could not be photographed) and includes: "Having a lot of letters still to answer from her"..."Wants to know if anything has 'been cut out' of any of his prior letters (by the Censors)...(NOTE: The likely reason that this V-Mail "could not be photocopied" is because of water stains along the bottom third. The V-Mail is easily readable in its original ink, and WAS passed and signed by the Examiner...it just likely couldn't pass the "photograph test" the Military mail examiners used at the time)... Dec 6th V-mail ALSO has the "water stains" but apparently had no problem passing the censors, and includes "How he feels good when he received mail"..." Received a letter from PAUL (his Brother) telling him it was his '1st day at FORT MEADE" ..."That her letters are a real 'morale builder'...Others include mentions of "Receiving a letter from Dave Wagner (a friend in another batallion) who told him of the places he has been, and that he had his address while he was still in Sicily...and is sure he could have found him as Wagner's Batallion was "only stationed about a mile from w I was at"..."Happy for her that she is going to get a raise (she works at a local Dairy)..."Hoping she receives a recent Christmas card he sent"..."Mentions one of her friends getting "cold feet" when she was trying to go to her boss and ask for a raise"..." That he received another letter from Dave Wagner who tells him he is now stationed in ENGLAND "..." he figures that Paul now knows how tough things can get,and laughs because apparently Paul thought it was "soft" before he got into the War "..."mentions other friends he knows and letters he received from them"...(A FUNNY line That Jack Crawford (another soldier serving) got a letter from Mary Babiary (an old girlfriend who works at the Dairy) and says that 'if the Dairy ever runs short on milk, that she could spare a couple gallons a day (Apparently, Mary Babiary was either VERY Well-endowed in the chest area...or she was a real "moo-moo") ..." That one of his new buddies knows some of the same Boys he knew back at Ft Bragg,...
