LOT: a matching PAIR of PORCELAIN Wall Pockets/Flower Holders/Sconces in a Flow Blue pattern of hand-painted iris with their leaves giving the effect of vertical stripes, and banded along the upper rim in hand-painted strokes of the same cobalt blue, producing an overall impression of Sumi-e( ink drawing) or watercolor. The center motif is of a blooming iris, with a budding one along each side. Each pocket is slightly different with the brush strokes of the leaves and the realization of the flowers deftly(!) done. Very old; they are unmarked. Origin unknown: they have a Dutch shape with the molded sections undulating in ripples all along the sides and front, but the iris looks oriental in style. Delft? English copy of Delft? Japanese copy of Delft? Japanese? If anyone knows anything, please email me; I am not an expert. We have had these for over forty years.
They are in superb condition: NO damage to the porcelain with NO chips, cracks, hairlines. I am calling these porcelain because I can see light through them from inside through the back; they are NOT made of coarse, grainy clay, so, not pottery. The only exposed section of unglazed clay is the upper rim, upon which they would have balanced in the kiln, and shows as a fine-grained, very pale grayish-white. T are a few very small bubbles in the glaze, and t is some light staining from use on the interiors. The pointed ends(bottoms) are clean, with no wear or chipping, and the slots on the back are not damaged nor worn thin. Each pocket has a few ghost-like smears of the blue glaze onto the white which is also typical of Flow Blue. Be certain to look at all the photos. Measurements: 12 1/2" tall, with the widest area of the shaped opening at 4 1/2". A very good weight, nicely balanced. With EACH pocket just under 4 lbs., double boxed, the PAIR will come in at 10 lbs, 6 ozs. shipping weight. Example above is for West Coast to East Coast.Email me for charges to your zone; sent Parcel Post or Priority, your choice. Buyer to pay shipping and insurance. International bidding accepted; just add Customs.
