Up for Bid is an Original Vintage 'ROCKPORT HARBOR' WATERCOLOR by Listed Artist LOUIS UNDERWOOD BRUYERE (Toledo Ohio 1884-1962) Signed Lower Right circa 1930 !!!! LOUIS UNDERWOOD BRUYERE was born in Newark NJ in 1884 along with his twin brother GEORGE STEBBINS BRUYERE. As children, Louis and George would save up their pennies to buy Chalk and together 'paint' the streets of town! Louis studied Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1906. He took a job with an Architecture firm in NYC. Sometime around 1915 he married and moved to Toledo Ohio where he became a renowned Watercolorist and, would live the rest of his life. The Bruyeres had a daughter ISABEL BUCHANAN BRUYERE who would follow in her father's footsteps and would become a Watercolorist in her own right. Louis and his wife lived most of their lives at 539 Wintrop St. Toledo Ohio. He was a member of the Tile Club and Ohio Watercolor Society. He exhibited at AIC in 1925, the Independent Art Show NYC, the American Watercolor Society, and the New York Watercolor Club. His watercolors are in the permanent collections of the Toledo Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Museum of American art in Washington DC. I have been fortunate to rescue about 30 watercolors by Louis, George, and Isabel Bruyere from the trash heap of obsurity! All of the watercolors that read more
