This piece depicts a landscape scene, showing a vast rural landscape painted from a high vantage point. There is a dirt path winding down through the hills to a low valley point in the center. There is a single figure that appears to be a child, walking along a wooden cart being pulled by a white horse. In the far off distance there is more hills/mountains. Overall it is an extremely well executed scene by a highly skilled artist. The large size and scope of the paintings makes it stand out when displayed. Does have some condition issues that will be described in detail below in the condition section. This painting consists of oil paint on stretched canvas and comes to you signed by the artist. Has 2 small tears/rips to the canvas near the center as shown in photo #11, as well as a small tear upper right as shown in photo #9. Paint shows some craquelure throughout as to be expected with age, but no real paint loss. Painting could clearly use a good cleaning, as it has darkened/browned over the years. Was previously framed, so there is some wear around the edges as shown. Perfect candidate for restoration, as it is a beautiful large scene from an artist with high auction records. One painting , Neck Road Farm House Brooklyn , has lead to aninteresting search for the house the artist depicted. Several other paintings suggest that the artist traveled extensively.The 1930 census shows Louis Saphier was born in Amsterdam in about 1877. He was listed as a self-employed artist who immigrated to the states in 1889. He wasinterviewed in an article reviewing the Washington Square art show of 1932 in New York.
