Louis Vuitton Vintage Damier Steamer Trunk - Trunk Dimensions: 23-3/4" wide x 16-1/2" deep x 20" high Metric Equivalent: 60cm x 42cm x 51cm - Serial Number: 125107 Up for auction is an authentic antique Louis Vuitton trunk dating from ca. 1888-1896. Historic Context : The exterior of the trunk is fabricated with Vuitton's DAMIER checker-board canvas, introduced in 1888 (just three years after the Paris factory opened the first Louis Vuitton store in London ). The DAMIER pattern was created by Louis Vuitton in collaboration with his son Georges, and bears a logo that reads "marque L. Vuitton deposee", which trademarks this pattern. These tiny logos can be faintly seen scattered over the surface of the trunk. Vuitton's new Damier pattern was displayed at the World's Fair in Paris in 1889, winning the company a gold medal. Louis Vuitton died in 1892, and his son, Georges, carried on the business. Condition : Exterior : The trunk's condition is very good for its age, with some overall denting and a 1" canvas tear on the trunk's back (see photos). The Damier pattern canvas is reinforced with metal edging. A few of the brads that attach the edging are missing or loose. T are some slightly rough areas on the canvas w shipping labels had been previously attached. The trunk's brass studs are all marked with "Louis Vuitton". Interior : The interior is very clean and lined with Vuitton's red and beige striped canvas that was put in production in his factory in 1872. T are only a few light spots of discoloration T is a removable clothes "basket", woven of cream-colored webbing with "LOUIS VUITTON" inscribed on the webbing. The "basket" is in excellent shape, with only some minor stains on the tie-down ribbons. The dark pink star-shaped ribboning on the lid is intact. The label on the right lower corner of the inside lid reads: PARIS 1 . RUE SCRIBE LOUIS VUITTON 149 . NEW BOND STREET . W. LONDON 125107 Hardware : The latch and handles are in good shape, and appear to be painted steel. " LV " is etched on the plate of each handle. The trunk came with a key that doesn't seem to work, and is not identified as a Louis Vuitton key. The key will be sold with the trunk. Dimensions : 23-3/4" wide x 16-1/2" deep x 20" high (60cm x 42cm x 51cm) and weighs approximately 27 lbs. Special features : Labeling on the trunk suggests multiple ownership - European and American. 1. European Ownership: U nder the handles on the left and right sides are vestiges of the letters "M M" with the word Paris underneath, painted in script with red and ochre colored paint. Written very lightly by hand, in script, on the top front of the interior basket is the name MOUNICHON (as close as I can decipher). Additionally, t is a partial oval shipping tag on the right side of the trunk that says, "LE GARDE MEUBLE PUBLIC, 18 Rue St. Augustin. 2. American Ownership: T are two shipping labels (one on the left side and one on the bottom of the trunk) with the following words: To: W.G.
