Excellent, outstanding condition, no damage. No nicks, chips, cracks, or repairs, no stains, no visible scratches or wear. One of the nicest examples of this type of antique pottery child's plate you will find. This is pottery, not porcelain, and t is appropriate small uniform crazing, or crackle, no glaze breaks. It measures 7-7/8 inches diameter, printed English Staffordshire Monochrome Blue and White Transfer Ware and an aesthetic style alphabet border. The art work is unsigned, but is unmistakably in the style of Louis Wain. Godden's mark 86 blue printed Allerton's with Crown and England, page 30 of the Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks. The mark is shown in this reference as circa 1890, the mark used from 1890-1912. To Note: Three tiny side edge skips, all appear to be in the making and not visible to casual inspection, only shown for accuracy with an extreme closeup photo of each at the end of this listing. Fine crackle can be seen in this close up of the mark This is wonderful scarce early child's transferware plate dates to 1890 or slightly after, a genuine Victorian or Edwardian antique. A scene with three Louis Wain (1860-1939) style anthropomorphic cats with large eyes and a parrot upon a perch fills the center. Mother cat is standing, wearing an apron, and has a a disapproving look, the kind you don't want to receive from Mother! Two little boy kittens are dressed in long pants, their playclothes, one has a patch on his trouser knee, and both look as if they have been 'naughty kittens', all are dressed in Wain's whimsical style, are standing together with clusters of flowers around the edges in the garden of an English home. The background is a geometric, like wallpaper, behind the parrot, geometric backgrounds are also typical of Wain's designs. The edges of the plate are lightly scalloped, and the border is an aesthetic stylized floral geometric. An old fashioned set of ABC's in all upper case letters around the rim completes this charming plate. "Come into the Garden, Maud " is the title of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's beautiful lyric poem of romantic love, first published in the early 1880s. A bar of music, medody line for this lovely Victorian poem, which would have been set to music. Plates like this one were used as teaching aids, so children learned the alphabet. Often the scene was a story showing a moral lesson. Illustrations from children's books were often the source of decorations like this one. Great expression on the faces! Angry mother cat and downcast kittens (whose body language and expressions make them look more upset about being caught than remorseful!) The scene might have been familiar at the time as a misbehavior (the parrot?) about to be punished. Alfred, Lord Tennyson. 1809-1892 COME into the garden, Maud, For the black bat, Night, has flown,Come into the garden, Maud, I am at the gate alone; And the woodbine spices are wafted abroad, And the musk of the roses blown. Small smear of blue glaze, shown below. I believe these are in the manufacturing, and not damage, shown for accuracy.Children's early alphabet plates of this quality are scarce and highly sought after. A great addition to any serious collection of early children's wares, for a cat lover, or Louis Wain collector. The pattern name is "Come into the Garden, Maud" by Charles Allerton & Sons, a pottery company in Staffordshire, England. Allerton had a little daughter, and he became known for children's ware and children's tea sets. The plate is marked with the pattern name on the front, and maker's name on the back.
