Please note, we have a very large collection of additional images of this piece available for your enjoyment below. Description:This listing is for a Period Louis XVI Inlaid Mahogany Marble Top Console Cabinet, probably circa 1780-1790. It is a gorgeous piece with incredible form and a deep glowing finish. The inlay work throughout is simply marvelous. The drawer has crossband inlay framed by stringer inlay, is flanked on either side by replaced pull hardware and a rococo form escutcheon. It is hand dovetailed front and back with a single piece bottom; this underside is fully hand planed with deep planing marks throughout, chamfering on the sides into the drawer frame. Lifting the marble reveals an incredibly heavy level of oxidization on the unfinished surface, with dovetail frame construction locking the piece together and chamfered panels connecting to make the frame below the marble. The inlay on the middle door is visually incredible - in rotating bands, the inlay literally creates an X through the face of the door, immediately bringing your eye to the center of the door, a very complex design of a swan on water with a background of trees. All of this is framed with stringer inlay. The corners feature hand crafted brass ormulu mounts. Doors rest on either side of the cabinet, swinging outwards on what appear to be original hardware. Each drawer is inlaid in a crossbanded checker pattern. The entire cabinet rests on four turned feet with original brass ormolu. The backside of the cabinet is fully oxidized, featuring hand planing throughout. This is a simply stunning piece. It is a rare find in this condition, as veneered pieces often become damaged in changing environments and regular use. This cabinet has seen very careful wear. It is an excellent find, fitting comfortably in a broad retinue of settings - dining room as a serving console, liquor cabinet or buffet. In the formal living areas, this is a strikepoint piece. In a broad entryway or hallway, it is a welcoming statement about the home. Measurements: 52 1/8" wide, 21 1/4" deep, 39 3/8" high Condition: Visually Outstanding Condition - Escutcheons replaced. Original lock hardware throughout. Marble top 20th century replacement. Pull hardware replaced. Veneer damage - minor and not visually detracting at all. Splitting inside of doors due to shrinking across the grains beneath the veneers, typical with age. Light dings/chips to marble, but no cracks or noteworthy damage. Refinished and polished. Dings and abrasions to piece throughout consistent with age. Structurally in fantastic condition. Please see photos below for full disclosure of condition and condition report.
