This is one of the most important early maps of the region. It represents the results of the early French explorations on the lower Mississippi and along the Gulf Coast and became the basis for most of the subsequent maps of this area. The area covered extends from the Texas border in the West to Bay St. Joes Florida in the East and the 33rd parallel in the North. A small inset map shows the more northern reaches of the Mississippi up to the Missouri. At the time this was French territory. La Salle had explored the lower Mississippi in 1682 and dâe(tm)Iberville founded New Orleans in 1717. The Spanish were present to the west and east (in Florida). Among the important landmarks mentioned on this map are: New Orleans; Biloxi; Pascagoula; Mobile; Pensacola; Houma; Baton Rouge (as a locality but no yet as a city); and Natchez. Interesting mention at the extreme west of the province of Tecas (a rare variation on Tejas or Texas). Excellent details of the birds-foot delta of the Mississippi, the Red River, the Pearl River, and the Alabama River. Many details of native settlements, including indications of villages destroyed during various battles. This is an exciting map to look at in detail.
