Louisiana Purchase Exposition Commemorative Medal, 1904 . By Adolph A. Weinman. Bronze; 71 X 71mm. Obverse: Columbia, arms spread wide and holding the U.S. flag, standing next to young maiden, representing the Louisiana Purchase Territory, divesting herself of the cloak of France, symbolic of her reception into the Union; in background is rising sun representing the dawn of a new era of progress; below the date "MCMIV"; around the figures the Exposition legend. Reverse: Eagle, wings spread, holding tablet with inscription; below are two dolphins representing the nation's eastern and western boundaries, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The medal is 3-pointed shield, with a field of stars around the border and a wreath on each point; the wreaths starting in in the upper left, contain "US" (the United States); "NJ" (representing Napoleon and Jefferson), and a Fleur de Lis. Struck by the U.S. Mint. Condition : Beautiful toning, a few small rim nicks on obverse: ABOUT UNCIRCULATED.
