THE SUN: ITS PLANETS AND THEIR SATELLITES: A Course of Lectures upon the Solar System Read in Gresham College, London In the years 1881 and 1882 Pursuant to the Will of Sir Thomas Gresham; Illustrated by 94 woodcuts, a chart of Mars, and eight Woodbury and Lithographic Plates London: Edward Standford, 1882, 6.5 x 8 in, 432 pp. Illustrated as noted above, including 3 tipped-in Woodburytypes out of the eight plates. Condition: Bound in original green beveled boards with ornate blindstamped and gilt design on cover and spine. Gilt is somewhat faded (see images), but still attractive. Moderate edgewear, especially to corners and spine ends with some loss to very bottom of spine ends. Ex lib, from the University of Glasgow Observatory with the usual stamps and discard stamps Very light and very scattered foxing--barely noticeable in most spots and mostly at the very edge of pages. Some handling smudges on a few pages. Otherwise clean, securely bound, and unmarked throughout. Overall a VG copy of a handsome edition. Information: We are pleased to offer this unusual and attractive overview of the solar system as known in the late Victorian age. Chapters deal with the sun and each of the planets up to Neptune, which had been discovered in 1846, as well as the asteroids. The pioneering 1865 astrophoto of the moon by the American amateur Rutherfurd is included as a tipped-in Woodburytype from the original negative; another Woodburtype of the solar corona was also made from an original negative; and there's a tipped in copy of one of Nasmyth's renderings of the moon that first appeared in the 1874 edition of Nasmyth and Carpeneter's The Moon . This is quite a scarce edition, and I have only seen two other copies in many years of collecting astronomy books. It will make a great addition to any library on astronomy, planetary science, geology, history of astronomy, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, asteroids, solar astronomy, lunar science, history of science, etc. Shipping: Book will be shipped media mail, well packed, at a cost of $4.00 to the US.
