Rare Austrian/German rocking horse on bows circa 1870-1900. He has a carved wooden head and the body is stuffed, and what I think is Jute covering. He has been restored with gesso on his rear ends which has a harder feel to the rest of his covering and has a replacement saddle. The bows measure 47 inches long by 15 inches wide. Height to the saddle is 21.1/2 inches. Height to his head is 29 inches. The length from front hoof to back hoof is 37 inches. He retains his rosettes etc., and a metal badge. Not many of these horses have survived due to the fact they were stuffed which made them very vulnerable to damage. This type of rocking horse is depicted in Marguerite Fawdry's book 'Rocking Horse Manufacture' (page 6). Although this horse seems pretty sturdy, I would not recommend children ride him as he is well over 100 years old, but he is a good example for the rocking horse collector.
