This beautiful instrument is quite stunning and complete with all its component parts including the auxiliary condenser lens, housed in a really superb wooden case with a very clever catch, and fitted in a soft, leather pouch. It is a Morton's ophthalmascope supplied by A & J Smith, Goldsmiths of 25 Nicholas Street, Aberdeen. With an amazing 29 tiny lenses selected by rotating the big brass dial and the top dial independently it is used to examine the eye either close up or at a distance. Whilst reading how the instrument is used I realised the larger mirror is double sided, one side magnifying the image for close up study and the other reducing the image for more distant observation, as I understand it. This led me to discover that the reverse side, the magnifying mirror is cracked so I added the last picture to show this - it still works well as no glass has been lost. The screw-on handle is made from a completely natural material, the material of choice in the Victorian era for such instruments. The whole thing is visually stunning with that combination of technical precision and craftmanship with elegance that the Victorians so excelled in achieving. The case measures 12 x 5 x 1.5cm overall .Paypal is the preferred form of payment and there is no charge for this service. Personal cheques, postal orders and bank drafts are acceptable read more
