George III Mahogany Folding Reading Stand Picture, if you will, the Georgian gentleman who wishes to read a book. The tomes were large and would, undoubtedly have been unwieldy on his lap, so he needed to prop it up whilst he read and leave himself free to scribble a few notes as he went. On his table or desk he places his reading stand and, in comfort, gets on with his task. In keeping with the attention to style of the time, this is a well designed object that is also pleasing and attractive to the eye. When closed it measures approximately 10 x 12 x 1½ (all measurements in inches.) It can, thus, be slipped into a drawer and kept ready for use. Well made of good mahogany, time has given it that rich colour and patina so reflective of its age. Apart from a small piece of wood missing near one hinge and some minor cracking, it is in excellent condition and is as ready for use today as it was when it was first made. T is no evidence to suggest any repairs or modifications and everything appears original. Note how the flap to hold the book in place has been shaped to fit exactly into the doors, that can be opened to accommodate the largest volume, and has three holes to allow a peg to be inserted and ensure that the book could not slip. The stands that engage the ratchet are also nicely shaped and the ratchet itself is in very good order. The two opening doors have each been made with two pieces of wood with grains at right angles to each other to prevent any possibility of warping. When I was a student, my tutor had a reading stand, but it was modern and did not have the class of this item. Lucky the person who owns it in the future.
