Victorians had a yearning for travel. One of the popular sights was the newly uncovered ruins of Pompeii. Travelers would take home souvenirs to remind themof their holidays and Lava Cameos from Mt. Vesuvius became very popular and spurred a new trend in Victorian Cameos.
This cameo is incredibly intricate and lavish in its design depicting Bacchante which was the female counterpart of the Roman God Bacchus, the god of wine and fertility. The high relief and intricate carving is exceptional. The leaves' every vein are detailed as is her flowing hair with tendrils flowing down the back of her neck. She has a flowing drape across her shoulders. Unlike some of the cameos I have seen, the woman in this cameo is very lovely with beautiful features and nicely defined cheek. The grapes and leaves are entwined thoughout her hair. The cameo itself is one of the most beautifully crafted lava pieces I have seen. It measures 1-3/4" by 1-5/8" outside measure and the cameo itself measures a tad over 1-1/2" by a tad under 1-3/8". T is a line in the cameo as you can see in the photos. It is a stress mark that you can actually see was produced by a framer who probably pressed too hard on that point. You can see the indentation on the gold frame. It is however a very smooth area and you cannot feel the stress line at all when you rub your finger or nail across it. It probably doesn't go through the cameo. It actually appears more pronounced in the photos than it does in person. What you see when you look at the piece is the beautiful Bacchante maiden. The frame is untested but looks to be gold filled not solid. It features the typical twisted rope design. It has the old safety catch clasp that opens from the top. A lovely addition to your Victorian Cameo collection.
