THIS IS A LOVELY VINTAGE D HANDLED SHOVEL STAMPED B.R (RE) BY CALDWELL OF STOCKTON HEATH. THESE DETAILS ARE STAMPED ON THE STEEL SOCKET ALONG WITH "1770", WHICH I UNDERSTAND WAS THE DATE THIS COMPANY STARTED MANUFACTURING. I BELIEVE THAT "B.R" STANDS FOR BRITISH RAIL, BUT I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO FIND OUT THE SIGNIFICANCE OF "(RE)". PERHAPS THERE IS AN ENTHUSIAST OUT THERE WHO CAN ENLIGHTEN ME?

THE SHOVEL STANDS A TOTAL OF 39.5 INCHES (1m) HIGH AND IS ABOUT 9.5 INCHES (240 mm) WIDE MEASURED IN A STRAIGHT LINE FROM SHOULDER TO SHOULDER. IT IS ABOUT 11.5 INCHES (292 mm) FROM THE SHOULDER TO THE POINT OF THE BLADE.

THERE IS SOME PITTING TO THE STEEL SOCKET AND HEAD, BUT THEY ARE OTHERWISE IN GOOD, CLEAN CONDITION. THE LOWER EDGE OF THE HEAD IS WORN VERY SLIGHTLY UNEVENLY BUT THIS DOES NOT GIVE ANY CAUSE FOR CONCERN. THE HEAD IS VERY SECURELY RIVETED TO THE SHAFT WITH NO SIGN OF ANY MOVEMENT BETWEEN THEM. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PHOTOS, THERE IS A (FADED) YELLOW PAINTED BAND ACROSS THE FRONT OF THE HEAD JUST UNDER THE SHOULDERS. THERE IS A SIMILAR PAINTED BAND ALONG BOTH SIDES OF THE SHAFT BETWEEN EITHER SIDE OF THE SOCKET.

THERE IS SOME LOCALISED DISCOLOURATION TO THE SHAFT AND HANDLE AS IS TO BE EXPECTED WITH A VINTAGE TOOL. THERE ARE ALSO A FEW VERY MINOR INDENTATIONS / ABRASIONS BUT NOTHING AT ALL SERIOUS.
