This auction is for a wonderful antique Limoges covered dish. The bowl is marked on the bottom and has the artist's initials on the bottom as well. The initials are SW; the mark for Limoges says "Limoges" "Depose" and has a faint maker's mark which I believe is the mark for A. Lanternier; an anchor with the initials, A.L. and would date the dish to 1891-1914. The dish has wonderful colors of soft greens, pinks, browns, with a great deal of gold gilt accents all over the dish and cover. The dish measures approximately 4 1/4 inches with the cover in place; without the cover the dish is 2 1/8 inches high. The dish measures 7 1/4 front to back and is 8 5/8 inches side to side. The inside area of the dish measures 4 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches. The lid has a very nice raised design and the edges of the dish have a very attractive scalloped design with embossed detailing which are similiar to a shell design. I believe that the hand painted design is of an underwater scene; seaweed, or sea plants, with fish. T is a fish on one end of the lid and also on one side of the dish. The hand painting is very nice and the colors are very pleasing. The covered dish in in very good condition. The bottom is excellent; t are no chips, cracks, breaks or repairs. The top does have one small chip, or flake, on one of the corners. It is not a deep chip; it is flat and looks like an area with no color or paint,so it is not too noticeable and does not distract greatly from the appearance; very hard to see. This is a wonderful dish with an unusual hand painted design. The hand painting is very well done and attractive. A true antique covered dish that would be wonderful to add to a collection.
