$20 Federal Reserve Note -- Hawaii overprint emergency issue, 1934A series, San Francisco FRB brown seal. Signatures Julian/Morgenthau. Serial number L87969955A. An interesting historical piece, as the Hawaii overprint currency were issued on an emergency basis, starting June 25, 1942, in case the Japanese invaded the islands and took over the large stocks of currency. In that event, the US government could then demonetize the notes, making them worthless. The notes were issued until October 21, 1944, then began being withdrawn from circulation, most of them being destroyed, at either a local crematoria, or in the furnace of a big sugar mill. Those notes escaping destruction were usually kept as curios and keepsakes of serviceman in Hawaii. Note has not been professionally graded; the following opinions on grade/condition are only my personal observations as a collector (I am not a dealer) -- NO warranty is implied; please look closely at photos to judge for yourself. I would estimate this note falls somewhere around the 15 range ("Choice Fine"). Note has seen fairly heavy circulation, and is relatively limp. Moderate soiling, corners slightly rounded; edges still rather clean and sharp. Minor folding, esp. the usual center fold vertical, and center fold horizontal. No pinholes, tears, splits, stains, missing pieces, ink markings. read more
