The Lower Depths (Toho, 1957). Japanese (20 X 29 ). This film was based on Maxim Gorky s play about 19th-century Imperial Russia and the tortured, poverty stricken souls who were separated from the wealth and privilege of the aristocracy. Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa transferred the setting to his own country s Edo Period to tell his version of the story. Toshiro Mifune plays a crooked gambler who falls in love with the sister (Kyoko Kagawa) of his vile landlady (Isuzu Yamada). Yamada feels spurned by Mifune and kills her own husband so she can pin the murder on him. Toward the end of the film, Yamada descends into madness, abandoned by all the people she has mistreated. There are pinholes, light stains, and fold lines. Here s a rare opportunity to acquire a beautiful country of origin poster for this Akira Kurosawa classic. Fine+.
