GULLAH SWEET GRASS BASKET

This is an outstanding GULLAH BASKET made in the late 1960's. My uncle was in the shipping industry and purchased this for my aunt on one of his trips to the Charleston area. She said he normally went to the Mount Pleasant area to eat seafood so that is probably w he picked it up. She kept this in a sealed clothing bag and only brought it out to put her plastic fruit in for the Thanksgiving holiday. As she would say "It was very expensive and it smells so pretty, I don't want it to get ruined"! It has been passed down to us and does not fit our decor. We did take it to a few of the roadside stands along Rt#17 near Mt Pleasant last month in hopes of finding out who had made it originally. The ladies were so nice and sent us to the next stand but no one seemed to know who had made it. We were told that the basket was an old one, which we knew, and was in lovely condition. They also told us what they would value the basket at, had they made it, which is a whole lot more than what we are asking! Ebay is definately on the buyers side on this beauty!!

The basket is, as you can see, very large. It measures almost 18" long by 13.5" wide. The base is about 2.5" deep and the handle stands 12" tall. T are 21 rows of coils in the base with 2 coils coming up from each side merging into the handle which is only 3 coils. That was one of the things that the ladies liked that we showed it to was the fact that whoever made this had blended the four coils into only two! I'm certainly not a basket maker but this must be a good thing!

Thanks to Auntie, this basket stills has that wonderful fragrance after all these years. We have kept it sealed as well for the nine years that we have held on to it.

This will be packed well for safe travel and if you live in the Charlotte area we could arrange for pick-up. Due to the size, the shipping is a little more than the smaller ones listed but it will be well worth it!
