is a large medium blue Staffordshire Platter in a pattern labeled Chinese Juvenile Sports, probably by Thomas Barlow and dating c. 1845-1850. This platter, which measures 18 ¾" x 14 ¾" has a wonderful transfer showing 3 Asian children, dressed in elaborate robes, playing a bowling-type game with a balls and pins. They are in an Oriental landscape with a lake, pagoda and small boat in the distance. The border includes bold large flowers separated by swags and medallions, etc. The platter is marked with a blue cartouche: Chinese Juvenile Sports and the letter 'B'. This platter is in general, in good condition, or better. The transfer is charming and crisp and the color good. T is a thin, faint hairline, about 1 ½", coming in from the right edge at about 2:30 (this line is not visible on the underside) and a small, ¼" x ½" edge chip (confined almost solely to the edge: that is how thick the pottery is on this platter) at about 1 o'clock. Finally, it looks like t might have been a gouge or something in the platter at about 9 o'clock ; this gouge seems to have been filled and is not noticeable. On the wall or in your cupboard, none of these flaws are very noticeable and this platter displays very well. Petra Williams describes this platter on p. 112 of Vol. 1 of her book Staffordshire: Romantic Transfer Patterns. Buyer prepays, plus postage (large and heavy, please remember).
