Antique white porcelain dish with a decoration painted in blue of bamboo, squirrels and vine, the border incised with two types of lotus flowers. In my humble opinion* Chinese, made in the Qing dynasty in the 18th century (Qianlong period). The diameter of the dish is circa 38.2 cm (or 15 inch). * This dish puzzles me (it does not help that Chinese porcelain isn'tmy speciality) as I am inclined to associate the radiating 'chatter' lines on the convex base with an early date (they are a common feature on 17th century porcelain). The decoration though I think points more towards an 18th century date. So please be so kind as to useyour own judgement. The attractive dish has an unusual decoration on its flat of squirrels and grape vines, signifying the wish to the owner of the dish to have many grandchildren in many generations to come (it is sort of a rebus: the Chinese words for pine -the symbol for old age - and squirrel are pronounced in the same way, the same goes for the Chinese word for peach - the symbol of immortality- and grape).
