Lucky Strike Tobacco Advertising 8 Day Regulator Clock Wow! What a find at a recent auction, and just in time for Holiday gift giving....that is if you have a collector special enough to give this gift! This is a antique Rosewood 8-day Regulator wall mounted clock that has an advertising dial for Lucky Strike Tobacco. The 14" wide hexagon shape case has veneer panels that are placed so the grain of the wood radiates out from the clock face...plus each panel is slightly a different color, so you get the added bonus of really noticing the wood. It appears that the case has the original finish which is in very nice condition. The bezel around the dial is brass. It round glass cover opens to show the 10" advertising dial. As you can see from the photo, the face shows spotting or loss of color, and t is a slightly scratched area, most likely from the process of winding the clock. The clock has the original key which winds the movement. It runs keeping time, and strikes on the hour, but I have not had it long enough to know if will run for weeks on end. It is an antique clock, and the auctioneer didn't know any history on the clock. I'd assume that it should be cleaned and serviced by a antique clock repair service to insure it's continued use. The small lower door is opened with a small brass knob. You can see the original reverse painted design in black and gold on the lower door is in very nice condition. The pendulum is brass with an embossed design. It has a screw at the bottom of the pendulum to adjust so the clock movement can be sped up or slowed down to keep accurate time. This style clock is often referred to as a schoolhouse clock and most likely was made by New Haven. I have not taken the dial off to see the works inside, so I do not know for sure that this is the manufacturer of the clock. ( I didn't want to disturb the face in order to see the works.) T is a partial paper label on the back of the clock, but you can't read it. On other examples I found on the internet, the paper detailed how the clock was given to the retail stores as a promotional gift for advertising the tobacco products. The clock was a gift when 2 boxes of tobacco was purchased by the store owner. The label also said that only one clock per retail establishment would be given. The key wind and the Lucky Strike logo will help date the clock, but the give away is the R. A. Patterson Tobacco Co. printed on the top of the red circle. Patterson started his company in Richmond, Va. in 1871. He sold it to the Blackwell Co. in 1903, but his name was used on the logo until 1917 when it was removed and a new logo designed. So this clock was made sometime in the late 1800s or very early 1900s. The clock is 22" in length.....a perfect size to fit in any area. Morphy Auctions on 12-11-2004 sold a Lucky Strike New Haven Schoolhouse clock. Their estimate was $700.00 to $1000.00. The clock with a waterstained and faded dial sold for $700.00 and that was almost 2 years ago. My reserve is much less than what that clock sold for. The information is still available if you choose to do the research. The clock will be carefully shipped double boxed with the pendulum removed and the pendulum wire secured to the case with an elastic band to prevent movement during shipping. Extra padding will be used around the glass dial cover. The pendulum and key will be wrapped seperately and placed in an envelope taped to the back of the clock. Fed Ex will be used as shipper, so a physical address will be necessary.
