Ludwig Bemelmans (1898-1962) was something of a Renaissance man. Mr. Bemelmans was an Austria-Hungary born American writer and illustrator of children’s books and a restaurateur. Bemelmans' “ Central Park” , mural on the walls of New York City’s Carlyle Hotel in Bemelmans Bar is his only artwork on display to the public. He also painted the children's dining room on Aristotle Onassis yacht Christina (now the Christina O ), for the young daughter of the magnate, Christina Onassis . With all of his accomplishments he is best known for creating the beloved children series “Madeline”. Each story about Madeline begins: "In an old house in Paris, that was covered with vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines... the smallest one was Madeline." Mr. Bemelmans obvious affection for France carries over to his art . This painting titled “Port Francais pendant un fete" (label on back) is gaily colored and beautifully composed. He employs the same color palette as in some of his “Madeline” illustrations. This is a very happy harbor scene. We are excited for the party that is about to begin. Two labels on back: Ludwig Bemelmans “Port Francais” Pendant un fete and gallery label: Loring Galleries, Greenwich Conn. In frame approx. 18” h x 36” l, image size approx. 11.5” h x 29.5” l.
