First of all, I am attempting to describe something I know very little about, namely musical instruments. Nonetheless, when I found this antique, mahogany snare drum in the attic of a three story Victorian house in southern Minnesota it caught my eye, and I still think that it is a beautiful and interesting piece. The inside of the drum is branded Ludwig and Ludwig Chicago in an oval pattern, as can be seen in an included photo. The main body of the drum is mahogany. The top and bottom hoops look to be maple. T are no cracks , no splits , and no breaks in the wooden pieces. The metal pieces, five cast iron hooks and screw rods, are still present and undamaged. The five metal knobs that are screwed into the body of the drum are stamped Ludwig and Ludwig , as can vaguely be seen in one of the included photos. The black plastic of the air hole, on the side of the drum, is undamaged, as can be seen in an included photo.
The original rope used to string the drum's top to the body is missing. In the pictures, I have strung it with twine as I believe it was originally put together. The two flesh hoops of the skin heads are t: one is torn badly, and the other is thin and dirty. Both can be seen in an included photo. The drum does not fit together as it should because the skins have shrunk and have no give to them. I believe the drum would work if new skin heads that fit properly were obtained, however, I don't know how to do this and feel, personally, that the drum shows better with the older (possibly original) skins. The snares are on the bottom, still strung and held by the snare holder, as can be seen in an included photo. The U.S. shield decal is in good shape, though it does have some loss as this was a working drum. Included are a pair of drumsticks and some assorted papers about how the drum should fit together. Dimensions: 14" in diameter; 15" height Overall, this antique, mahogany Lugwig and Ludwig snare drum with U.S. shield decal is in fair to good condition, has most of its original pieces and parts, and shows very well. The mahogany body still has a rich luster and the U.S. shield has maintained a vibrant color. I believe the drum was likely used in a parade originally and undoubtedly adds intrigue and character to any room it is in. It will make a wonderful addition to any home or collection. Please e-mail any questions, and I will do my best to answer them.
