This is an impossibly rare 1673 Charles II Crown graded AU-50, by ANACS. English Milled Coinage by Cope & Rayner rates this date as a Rarity 4 and I cannot help but wonder if this might be the Rarity 5 overdate 3/2??. I don’t know because I’ve never seen one, but the 3 is very strange looking and the 6 is definitely recut. This crown is absurdly difficult to photograph so that you see the wonderful glistening and colorful luster. When rotated in the light the coin reveals a lot of shimmering golden pink tones with seafoam blue/greens along the edges; the reverse is almost completely lustrous in golden pink with just an occasional hint of blue/green. NONE of this LUSTER shows in the photos that why I’ve included so many. The Obverse portrait of Charles is highly detailed with a full puffy cheek and good hair detail without the usual center weakness of strike ; the reverse is evenly struck with good detail with the very center showing just the slightest weakness. The coin has no major hits or scraps on either side and little haymaking, a very clean coin. PCGS has never graded any Charles II crowns higher than AU58 (4 of the 5 are 1662s) their highest 1673 is graded VF. Sorry I do not have an ANACS population report. Also I bought this coin in the holder in 1990 when I believe grading standards were stricter, so it might grade higher read more
