This card is for the last planned flight of the LZ 130 Graf Zeppelin, sister airship of the Hindenburg for its series of summer flights to airshows at major German cities in 1939. The German Wehrmacht was poised to attack Poland, and it is probable that the Luftwaffe cancelled the flight to Konigsburg in Eastern Prussia as those aboard the Zeppelin would be aware of the vast army preparations underway for the impending attack. Within a week, the ship was hung up in its hangar at Frankfurt and deflated to prevent its being destroyed in an attack, eventually to be dismantled and its frame used for military purposes in May 1940. This card bears the Frankfurt am Main airport cancel over the green 50 pfennig airship stamp issued in 1938 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Count Zeppelin's birth. Also bears a red post office stamp stating the the mail is being delivered by regular means since the flight had been cancelled. Winning bidder pays shipping.
