M17 Elbow Telescope manufactured by M.L. Co. 1943. No. 53397 G.I.R. No other identifying markings. [except for H- 182965 lightly hand-scratched in the black-painted top lens housing] Very clean, retaining almost 100% of what appears to be the original olive drab paint finish. Probably a long range naval spotting scope, but possibly an anti-aircraft artillery sight. Optics are good--lenses are clean, clear, and unscratched; the view seems a bit hazy when viewing near objects (the objective lens is large (2.25 inch), so the telescope may not be designed for near-field viewing). T is a simple cross reticle in the view field (two fine lines divide the field into equal quadrants)all four filter positions work fine (CLEAR, NEUTRAL, RED, AMBER). The ocular lens has adjustable focus from -4 to +2 (this may sharpen the near-field view). The focus ring twists smoothly and has a firm fit. Telescope measures overall about 11.5 inches long x 5.5 inches high, the mounting base is 5 inches in diameter with three large (.75 inch diameter) captive knurled mounting screws that thread normally. Two of the seven Torx screws that secure the top plate are missing (easily replaced if desired, but unnecessary; the five present screws secure the top tightly and solidly). And t is a numeral 2 stenciled in white paint on the left hand side of the body. (If read more
