's a great item for holiday entertaining--a large (approx. 11 x 15 inches) fluted edge platter made by the famous majolica design firm, MacKenzie-Childs. If you know MacKenzie-Childs you know they are famous for their whimsical approach to pottery, and this platter showcases their talents. It is made of terra cotta colored clay with a thick overglaze which features pink tulips in the center, surrounded by various bands of patterns, including a pastel blue border with yellow diamonds. This is, I'm told, the Aalsmeer pattern, which makes sense since the pattern features Dutch tulips. As is true with all MacKenzie-Childs items, t are some imperfections in the glaze. One sort of "hole" is on the reverse of the plate near an edge, and t are two slots on the back to allow a wire to be inserted for hanging. T is one imperfection which keeps me from saying that this platter is like new in every way. T is a chip in the glaze ONLY on the edge on the front of the platter. It is about as big as the tip of your little finger. It is NOT a chip in the majolica but only in the thick glaze. I really think this can be pretty easily repaired or covered up by some gesso and some gloss acrylic paint, because t is nothing on the surface of the platter which would give it away once the glaze was filled in.
