S & P Harpoons We hand make museum quality harpoons. These are real harpoons , hand made new, but aged to look old. Our harpoons are typical representations of the "irons" found in the Catalogue of The Whaling Museum, Old Dartmouth Historical Society in New Bedford, MA. The iron is an early two-flue type (the oldest type used by the whalers), and is patterned after an iron by Josiah Macy. He was born on Nantucket in 1805. He moved to New Bedford and made harpoons there with his three sons. The iron measures 35 1/2 inches long from the tip to the end of the split socket. It is hand formed, and aged thru controlled corrosion to an antique fire black patina. The split socket is served with genuine Stockholm tarred marline ( the good stuff and expensive) and secured with a whalers turkshead knot to prevent chafing of the whale line when in use. It is stamped WB ( waist boat, to denote the whale boat station ) and Macy. It is mounted to the pole using genuine hemp line, not cheap manila! ( The best and expensive also ) Thus overall it is 7 foot 4 1/2 inches long. The pole is dense Alaska Spruce and is selected from a standing dead forest making the pole over 100 years old in itself. It is hand hewed using a draw knife and represents the age of the old poles. This is a classic double flue harpoon. This whalecraft makes an excellent display of the whaling era. It is suitable for home, office, museum, and anywhere a nautical theme is desired. The pictures are of this harpoon. They are the best found anywhere! Lots of labor and genuine materials ensure a great product. Some of our harpoons are used in the subsistence whale fishery. Others are used on large denizens such as halibut and shark! Comments and questions appreciated! Thank you, Harpoonguy. Rustic display hangers are included! NOTE: For Australia we have to cut the pole and pin it with dowels so it can be whole again. This is do to shipping length regulations. Add $20.00 for this. Cheers Hand Made In The U.S.A.
