Up for auction is a 1940's-vintage, slant-front, Governor Winthrop desk. The manufacturer, Maddox Table Co., operated in Jamestown, NY, from 1898 to 1984, evidently specializing in good quality Colonial Revival furniture done in fine, exotic mahogany. This desk features four serpentine, dovetailed, full-size drawers, the top one of which has an added organizing system (see picture 6). Four ball-and-claw feet and Chippendale style brasses enhance its faithfulness to an earlier era. Behind its slant-front desk top, upheld by automatically extending supports when the desk is opened, are multiple compartments and curved-front drawers, a center cubby with a shell-motif door, and two hidden compartments disguised as columns (see photo 3, with one of the 'columns' pulled out to reveal the hidden compartment). The desk does have its original key and lock, but the lock is unpredictable. Because of its substantial size (approximately 39" wide, 42" tall, and 24" deep) the desk is an impressive and very functional piece of furniture.Its original label remains attached on the rear of the desk, identifying not only its manufacturer but the company's affiliation with the Mahogany Association, which guaranteed that the piece would be made of "genuine mahogany."
