Mary Maddox Governor Winthrop Bookcase Secretary Desk. Mohogany Colonial Revival. In excellent age condition. During the 19th Century and and into the mid 20th Century from Jamestown. Well known for their excellent craftsmanship.
Both solid mahogany woods and veneers in the upper decorative section. It looks to be all original. All hardware appears to be original including the locking mechanisms, the brass hinges, and the lever clasp inside the bottom of the left bookcase door. Bought at Antique store. Was told it was a Governor Winthrop Secretary. Was told from 1925. I don't have proof of an age. The desk top opened is 21 inches deep to the drawers. T is 7 usable inches under the 4 drawers. The space in 3/4 inches thick with a usable writing surface of 29 inches wide by 21 inches deep. Four vertical pigeon holes surround four Hidden Document pull-out vertical files, and one center cabinet with door and nice sunburst carving. Below these cubbies are four small drawer fronts. The slant front desk door is in fine working condition with original brass double hinges and automatic loafers below (support arms).T is wear on the front slant and writing surfaces. One little ding on the right front lower corner. One other on the front with the usual dings, guys make during the bill paying time at the desk. 4 Serpentine drawers with Original Brass Bail Pulls. Four ball and claw feet. The ball is apart of the feet. The slant front door comes complete with ornate key and locking mechanism. The bookcase has lovely glass doors with fretwork; a catch-hinge behind the left side door in the inside bottom area of the door; T are three shelves counting the bottom permanent shelf. The top two shelves have rear plate grooves. The top crest rail attached trim is a nicely carved broken-arch pediment that includes one center flame finial over a lovely and large turned urn base. Surpentine doors. This piece measures 78 inches tall from floor to the top of the center finial. 28 inches from the floor to the desks flat surface. 30 1/2 inches wide. 11 inches from the writing surface to the top of the inside. bookcase 26 1/2 tall inside the shelves. This piece is a two man moving job. Which means when you come to get it. Bring a friend. I live upstairs. I will not help. Be on time. Tow photos taken of the top writing surface. One dry photo before being cleaned and oiled . One cleaned and oiled. I let it soak. Then wipe off excess. T is no world wide shipping. It is suppose to be local pickup only. That is what was typed into description. But that is not what came out. No World shipping. If you do buy it and you are not local. You are responsible for the shipping. I am not going to take it to San Francisco to ship it. That is over an hour away. I don't have the time.
