INSURANCE EXTRA.This utterly magnificent Edwardian completely handmade antique Brussels lace tablecloth that looks as etally spun as Gothic cobwebs is ONE unbelievably continuous piece of lace . No seams. I believe the lace itself is made of linen. It is truly an heirloom treasure. It would make a lovely endowment to a local church or museum. This is an extraordinary quality heirloom linen set , made in a convent between 1910 and 1915 of the kind of quality that has long been extinct and would make a fabulous wedding or anniversary present or a gift for any truly unforgettable occasion. It has never been used and everything still has its original finish. This kind of lace is such a direct link with past centuries. The skill for this sort of luxury, originally reserved for the nobility of the past few hundred years was taught in convents and to noblewomen and later kept up to make church cloths and vestments until about the Second World War. It truly is lost art.Even if today you still could find anyone who could still make this sort of intricate lace and of the same quality materials , the cost would be in the tens of thousands. It must have taken months to make this and an expert to do it this correctly. It has 12 hand-spun linen and matching lace trimmed original napkins to go with it. They measure 20 inches square and are trimmed with the same lace as cloths and have a tab design of it in one corner. My Buy It Now price is an exceptionally reasonable $695.00. Not much more than what most fine linens sellers would charge for either just the cloth or just the napkins, so you really are getting a 2 for 1 value. And you'll probably never get a chance like this on eBay again. T's only one and when it's gone, that's it.With the dollar at its current low, you'd pay three times that in Europe (plus duty) or expect to pay at least twice that at any fine linen seller's booth at an antiques show Payment is by Paypal only and must be paid immediately at the end of the auction or it will be re-listed within 3 hour's time.I ship world-wide.What is amazing about this cloth and napkins is they all still have the original finish and have never been used. These were part of a trousseau purchased in Europe in 1913 by a very wealthy relative of one of my very rich neighbors. They were one the historic founding fortunes in San Francisco. About thirty years ago, having found out that I dealt in antiques, she called me up to her country place and pulled a wonderful old Vuitton trunk out of storage. When we opened it it was filled to the brim with an untouched collection of exquisitely embroidered trousseau linens. It seems that these were purchased by a bride to be. Her fiance was killed early in the First World War and these linens- many monogrammed--all hand-worked, according to my seller, in Europe convents, were put away in the country. We were the first to open the trunk in 60 or so years.I bought it all, including the trunk, which I sold a while back. This tablecloth set is part of the table linens in the collection. I'll be selling more of it throughout the spring . I've never used this exceptionally elegant and very formal set. It truly is museum quality and meant for a very special setting or occasion.T are two little lentil size spots on the tablecloth and one napkin has several spots similar to rust spots which I assume are from the effects of age. Any good cleaners, or preferably a French laundry, can remove them, but I have learned from selling textiles on eBay that every collector has their own standard of textile conservation. So I am leaving up to the buyer. They are, at any rate, very small, and insignificant and will come out. It's all perfectly even and both sides match each other perfectly ...
