BREATHTAKING! VERY RARE ORIGINAL ENGLISH ANTIQUE ART NOUVEAU 9 CARAT GOLD LAVA CAMEO PSYCHE PENDANT/NECKLACE. Circa early 1900s. Description: The art of cameo carving came from an incent Rome, Italy. Highly sought after around the world carved lava, shell and stone cameo's are still very popular among collectors today and are hard to find! Only experienced skilled carvers were able to create high level of details and transform piece of lava stone into a masterpiece! It takes skills, creativity and many hours of hard work. Here is an example of such! Circa early 1900s. This elegant and refined Antique Art Nouveau hand carved cameo is a depiction of Psyche, the bride of Cupid. Cupid pricked himself on his own arrow and fell in love with the beautiful mortal Psyche. After many trials, Zeus gave permission for the two lovers to marry and Psyche became an immortal. Psyche in Greek means both "soul" and "butterfly"--- the soul was seen as a butterfly which left the body after death. This stunning portrait is masterfully hand carved (in seldom seen extreme high relief and full face 3/4 turn profile) with gorgeous details and is a perfect example of a fine craftsmanship! It is remarkable for its delicacy of execution and its rarity. Details are simply magnificent! This large carving is elegant and complex at the same time, emphasizing the greatest femininity of the cameo. The effect is quite beautiful! She is simply breathtaking with her exquisitely carved and finely proportioned face features, pulled back garlands of hair and her signature double butterfly wings behind her back. Her head is slightly tilted and her eyes are closed. Let the pictures do the talking.... Extraordinary!! This timeless beauty is framed in very elegant and heavy 9 carat solid yellow gold bezel setting with twisted rope around it. L arge folding bail and heavy 26.5'' long chain finishes the look. All original and all 9 carat solid gold. Chain does not have a clasp and does not come off of cameo pendant. Could be easily separated by a jeweler if desired so. Back of the setting has London England gold assay Hallmarks. Cameo was most likely carved in Italy and framed in England. No chips or cracks, one faint small surface line along left side. Chain and frame is solid and holds the cameo securely. Dimensions: without bail 1 5/8'' x 1 5/16'' x appr. 3/4'' rise. Chain is endless without clasp and is 26.5'' long. Marks: backside hallmaked with English assay gold stamps (makers mark AMW, crown, 375, cats face, letter S). Gold was also jeweler tested.
