This is an extraordinary hand painted Saji Fancy China/Porcelain cup and saucer I obtained at an estate sale several years ago. I am familiar with several of the more intricate Saji patterns, but this one is the most beautiful I've ever seen. The design consists of gilt whole flower designs within which are multiple flowers drawn in miniature. These smaller flower pictures have a raised background of hundreds of pinpoints and swirls all done in gilt with probably microbrushes. Next to these pure gilt flower designs are whole stems of either cherry bossom or dogwood done in lavender, gilt and robin's egg blue in a very delicate yet strikingly beautiful outline design. The combination of the design and the vibrant colors takes your breath away. On the outside of the upper rim, t is one design as shown plus a entirely gilt handle. When held to the light the ceramic or porcelain is translucent. The teacup has one foot. The saucer edges are fluted ever so slightly. The cup and saucer are in excellent vintage condition without rough edges, repairs, chips, crazing or faded gilt. This piece was kept in my china cabinet until today when photographed. If you collect cups andd saucers, this set will quickly become one of your favorites. In any position it is displayed in, the intricate painting and design work are evident. The dimensions of the saucer are 5 1/2 inches across and the top of the teacup is 3 1/2 inches across.
