Of the many tall case clocks that we've offered over the years, this is surely the most impressive. The very tall case stands just under nine feet. Bold grain pattern on the Mahogany case compliments the magnificent hood and scrolls. The dial retains the clockmaker's signature (see photograph)--DAVID WEATHERLY- PHILADELPHIA and the rear of the dial also retains the dialmaker's signature-Spencer Nolen-Boston. Nolen married into the Willard family in Boston and was a renowned dialmaker whose work is often found on the finest tall case clocks throughout America today. The bell on the clock movement was cast in Philadelphia by JOHN WILBANK and has his name and the word-Philadelphia cast into its cup. Wilbank was the caster whom the Continental Congress commissioned to produce another Liberty Bell after the original cracked while tolling the death memorial for Chief Justice Marshall (who had died two days earlier) in July of 1835. The cracked bell was rung several times after this but became completely useless after being rung for the birthday of George Washington in 1843. Wilbank cast another at the order of the Congress. The eight-day movement has been professionally hand-cleaned and operates perfectly. There is a rolling moon in the arch and on the four spandrels of the dial are American-flag striped shields with a blue upper field- which were quite popular around the time of the War of 1812 (see photograph). This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who values fine Philadelphia clocks and furniture and whose ceiling height is at least nine feet. It will present itself in an imposing manner whereever the next owner places it in his or her home, and will surely be the focal and conversation point in the room.
