Presenting,for the first time ever, an exemplary portrait of the pre-eminent Qajar royalFATH ALI SHAH. This pristine example, unlike the epic life-size examples made to immortalize the shah in foreign royal courts, was made to introduce the Shah to his Persian subjects. The Shah stands up-right which gives him a majestic countenance and a cartouche on the upper right-hand corner identifies FATH ALI SHAH. The work is attributed to Muhammad Hasan and his followers (brush analysis detects the brush strokes of the master only on the facial region of the portrait); nonetheless this painting is a highly prized piece of Persian art history. Medium : Oil on Canvas Size : 46 * 22 inches, not stretched or framed Artist : Attributed to Muhammad Hasan and studio Estimated Value : 20,000 to 25,000 GBP Date Completed : Middle period of Fath Ali Shah rule, circa 1819. Provenance : The painting has come to us recently and directly from the collection of Abbas Heydar Pahlavi who is an art connoisseur and loyalist currently residing in Tehran. The collection of Mr. Pahlavi, who is a minor noble and aristocrat, includes numerous gems of Persian art history. He is interested in permeating his collection to all parts of Europe and America and only to the Persian diaspora to ensure that the legacy of the monarchy and the art history of his beloved country do not perish with his death. The painting was originally made by the royal art studio to be presented to the city of Karaj in 1819 so the inhabitants of that city could familiarize themselves with the grandeur of their king. It was exhibited for a very short period during the early and mid-20 th century at the Pearl Palace. Authentication : Authentication is confirmed by two specialists in Iranian monarchical art in Tehran, who viewed the painting in person and confirmed its authenticity. Also pigmentation testing was done in Russia by specialists from the Hermitage museum (Which houses two amazing Fath Ali Shah portraits) and confirmed that all the pigments, which are listed below, come from Iran and the time period of the shah. - Prussian blue - Lead White - Vermilion - Orpiment - Red and yellow ochre Also linseed oil was detected as the binding agent which strongly suggests the authenticity of the painting. Also a tread count was done on the cotton canvas which came out at 60 to 56 inches squared which is an exact match to other prominent paintings of the time. Strong interest has been shown by two of the major English auction houses to sell the portrait on our behalf; they have failed to provide any guarantees to the price and destination of the painting so we have decided not to work with them. Condition Report : Tears around the outer edges, discoloring, dust in cracks of oil paint, small watermarks on the back of canvas, confirmed to have been re-sized and varnished in early 20 th century which has caused a little dullness and flattening of the paint, and fading of oil paints on the lower dress of the Shah. Other minor and inconsequential issues are present, please look at the photos, but everything is mendable. Portrait is, overall, in an excellent condition and is an exemplary example of Iranian Royal Portraiture. THE PAINTING IS IN ORIGINAL CONDITION AND A RESTORER'S BRUSH HAS NOT TOUCHED IT.
