This Rare & Magnificent very large German Black Forest Hand Carved "Hunter" Cuckoo clock was purchased from a recent private estate sale. As can be seen in the pictures below, this incredibley large carved Cuckoo clock is absolutely gorgeous in every detail. The clock was totally hand carved by German wood carvers and made from the trees in the Black Forest region of Germany. The clock is exceptionally large with a lenght of 24" from top of deer to bottom of pendulum . The width is 15" at the widest point. T are so many wonderful carved items depicted on this clock , that I will try to mention as many as I can in this limited space. The central part of the clock was carved to depict a Mountain Chalet with a sharp pictched roof. Starting at the top t is a real eye catcher depicting a large Stag's head complete with long White antlers and displayed on a 'Shield' shaped wooden plaque. The Stag even has large natural looking glass eyes. Beneath the mounted Stag are carved Forest Floral depicting forest tree branches and Elm leaves. Criss crossed on the front of these Floral items are two long carved Riffles . The back ground of the center sides , top and bottom of the main part of the case are more of the Forest tree branches and Elm leaves. This piece was carved from a single piece of wood. Displayed on the right side of the floral carvings is a large hand carved Rabbit. He is hanging upside down and has realistic glass eyes. On the right side is a woods Pheasant that is also hanging and also has glass eyes. At the center bottom is a carved Hunter's pouch complete with carved straps and fringe. Displayed on this pouch are two more game birds also with inlayed Red glass eyes . The face of the clock is numbered in White Roman numerals . The hands are also very decorative and White in color. The face is marked "W-Germany". In the upper peak of the front is a little hinged door that the Cuckoo will appear on the half hour and hour. He will coo coo once on the half hour and as many times need to tell the hour of day. This Cuckoo bird was also carved from wood and hand painted . His wings are jointed and flop as he bobs up and down when Coo Cooing. T is also a chime that sounds in the background when the Cuckoo bird coo coos. The movement of the clock is one of the finest quality made. It was created from Brass metal and powered by two very large metal pine cone shaped weights that hang from Brass chains. The clock is operated by a hand carved wooden pendulum that swings back and forth as the clock runs. The back of the clock has a access door that is marked "West Germany 8 Day 7-69" (7-69 is possibly the date the clock was made). The clock runs perfect and the overall condition is excellent. I do not see any cracks, chips ,repairs, etc. This clock has really been pampered over the years. If you have been looking for one of the best old German carved Cuckoo clocks, then you can not find one any better than this one and it runs for 8 days. I will keep my price very low and remember this auction is for only 5 days, so place your bids early. Buyer to pay shipping costs. Money order or cashiers check for payment. Thanks for viewing.
