Incredibly amazing, antique Reed & Barton silverplated (possibly re-silvered?) tankard style baby christening/presentation cup. It is really difficult to do this wonderful cup justice with my photography, as the attention to the storybook detail is amazing and very finely worked. It is done in the Aesthetic Movement style, featuring an Eastlake decorated handle, with the charming tableau (covering one side of the cup) of LIttle-Bo-Peep and her little dog searching for the lost flock. All this is set amid flowers and trees with a picket fence in the background, and the sun shining overhead. On the reverse side are the lost sheep frolicking along, who presumably, after finding their way home beside the same fence and under same trees illuminated by a quarter moon, are shaking their tails behind them. T is an cartouche in the center of the two tableaux, engraved with the name HAROLD. The cartouche is surrounded by the limbs of the trees, and flowers at the bottom. Under the cup scene in the front is a banner with "Little Bo-Peep has lost her sheep, and can't tell w to find them engraved on it. On the reverse, beneath the homecoming sheep, also on a banner, is engraved "Leave them alone and they'll come home, wagging their tails behind them". Wonderful, wonderful, once in a lifetime cup. The reason I believe it may have been re-silvered is because it is in such excellent condition, but then again, was possibly never used. It is marked something? (possibly metal) plated by Reed & Barton, with the number 1082 and gilt. May be a few tiny, barely discernable teeth marks on top rim (not through the silver though), otherwise perfectly beautiful. The cup measures 3 1/2" high, the diameter of the base is 3/ 3/4", while the top opening is 2 1/2". I tried to photograph it in different lighting situations, hoping to show all the detail favorably.
