This mahogany traveling desk has many hidden compartments and unique features. Desks of this type were originally designed to be carried by the writer during his travels. The desk is made of the choicest mahogany woods with a dramatic grain. There is solid brass banding along all the outside edges and corners and flush mounted brass handles for carrying. The top opens to reveal a slanted writing surface covered in gold tooled leather. The bottom half of the writing surface has brass latches which release to reveal storage for papers. There is a working key and lock that opens the top half of the writing surface for additional storage. In this storage area are 3 hidden drawers which are revealed when released by moving a piece of wood located under the small lift lid with the ivory knob. Next to the lid is a pencil/pen compartment with hidden storage below. Notice the 3 slots for ink bottle storage. In addition, there is a unique locking feature in which a hidden drawer on the outside of the desk can be accessed only when the top of the case is opened. There is a mahogany stand that was made much later to hold the desk when not being otherwise supported by your legs. The desk is in excellent condition having its original finish. The leather is in very good condition with some wear commiserate with age. The desk measures 8" tall without the stand. This is a handsome piece of furniture that will intrigue everyone.
