Up for auction is a wonderful George Jones majolica sardine box in excellent condition. This piece has a beautiful turquoise ground with green pointed leaves. The interior color is lavendar and the fish are black, white and gray. The color has three fish lying on a bed of seaweed. The detail on this piece is excellent and evidence of a good mold. The base of the box is has the G. Jones touch mark and the number 1831 written on it. The sardine box was made in England by G. Jones in the 1870's. The condition is very good and nearly without an issue. The only thing that I can find to point out is a very small 1/16" area on the rim of the base that appears to be a glaze skip rather than a chip in that t are traces of yellow glaze in the area. I cannot find any other faults. T are no restorations, repairs, cracks or hairlines. T is typical very fine crazing in the glaze. This is a very nice piece. Bid with confidence. The dark areas are shadows from not using a flash. The interior pink color of the lid and base are identical. I have added a reasonable reserve to this piece that is well below its true value.
