Purchased in an antique store in Dresden Germany, I was told that this is a piece of Sitzendorf porcelain. The lady in the shop was t helping out the shopkeeper who was taken ill. She was not knowledgable about the inventory and tfore I have a very uncertain provenance. I fell in love with this cherub for many reasons. The lovely painted face, the delicately sculpted hands and feet ,the very chubby thighs and knees and my favorite part, the Dolphin-like magical fish he is holding.Measuring 15" tall with a base of 7.25" in diameter. The circular base is covered in pink, pale yellow and white three dimensional flowers. These are interwoven with leaves and closed rose buds in varying shades of green.T is a gold painted stripe around the base as well as another circle of lighter green foliage. The cherub is leaning against a rose and leaf covered tree stump. The fin and tail of the dolphin curve out of the bark and are also covered with three dimensional green leaves. The skin of the figure is a very luminescent and realistic color. Even the toenails are subtly painted. For modesty sake he is wearing a pink swirling ribbon like scarf. He holds a leaf in one hand. the chest is muscled and painted with pale pink accents. The other hand is holding the top fin of the fish which is painted a pearl grey. His yellow protruding eyes are encircled in black with black pupils. His mouth becomes the candle opening which is accented in pale pink. The cherub's hair is finely sculpted and is cream with gold accents to imitate curls. The lips are full and painted pink, the eyes are blue with dark pupils and the brows are delicately painted with gold. Imperfections include :roses with some missing petals, four slightly chipped leaves and a chipped off piece at the back top of the candle opening approx .1" long. This is not noticeable from the front. Also it appears that the candle opening which measures 1.5" in diameter and 1" deep is unglazed inside. The bottom is marked with two parallel blue lines and a blue line running diagonally through them.It is also marked with the #210. I am selling one of my favorite treasures as a good will gesture to my husband who does not care for cherubs.Perhaps, he will sell his kyak for me.
