This is an antique bread slice toaster in the rare maltese cross shape. Heavy wire with original black enamel wooden handle and tightening ring. Measures 17 1/2 inches long with handle. Near mint with some age toning. Used to toast slices of homemade bread over wood stove or open flame. Authentic. High quality. Purchased by an Amish family. Great early kitchen equipment from the 1800's. Nice original wire work. Excellent condition. Maltese cross The Maltese cross or Amalfi cross is identified as the symbol of an order of Christian warriors known as the Knights Hospitaller or Knights of Malta . It was originally the symbol of Amalfi, a small Italian republic of the 11th century, but has come to be identified with the Mediterranean island of Malta .
