MAMMOTH DEMIJOHN Five Gallon Carboy CRUDE APPLIED TOP
Granted, this bottle is somewhat smaller than the size of the traditionally interpreted mammoth; but you should be able to get the idea: this bottle is HUGE! Exceptionally clean with 'superior clarity. Pretty much 'standard aqua' though a bit darker in the thicker areas. Lip shows a fat and sloppy, irregularly applied top with great twists and striations ---look at that big 'fold' of glass under the top! In decades of collecting, buying, selling and travelling, this is only the third five-gallon demijohn we've ever found with an applied top. Attractive striations and subtle surface textures throughout the body. Crudely blown; showing prominent mold seams (that disappear just past the curve of the shoulders) and an irregular, elongated neck. Smooth base that probably missed the pontil rod by about ten or fifteen years. Almost 22" high with a base diameter of about eleven inches. This is rare and unusual size with a handsome long neck; probably spent most of it's life encased in woven wicker in order to have survived so long! No chips, dings or bruises and not even a flea bite. In spite of its impressiveness, t is merely a single, very subtle flaw that was only noticed by our photographer: t is a very tiny star about halfway up the body; naturally, this is mentioned for the sake of accuracy, not for aesthetics. A piece of such tremendous display strength can clearly take a position as the centerpiece of a collection. A wonderful addition to any collection. Probably held wine or liquor at one time; anything non-carbonated, since the glass is veritably paper-thin in much of the body! A particularly attractive collection of hand-blown American demijohns can be assembled in the course of a couple years, for a rather modest investment. High bidder agrees that effective padding, packing and shipping for this fifteen-pound behemoth shall be limited to only twenty-five dollars, throughout the United States.
